New Video!

I love these blog posts when I can post video's with my music in it.
This one is again by Aiden Witral, as you remember he makes all those good atmospheric machinima video's in Second Life, both of static, moving life and live performances of artists.
The music is the set I did at his island last week to a audience of few people, but it was a really nice event and I was glad to play there again.

If you are wondering how I do all this! (PART 2)

Its been few weeks and I completely forgot to write you how I do all this!
By all this I mean stream/ play/ record my music and virtualy "send" it to your sound speakers.
As you may know, or wonder I play my music all live. No DJ'ing, no predefined or prerecorded (only for few field recordings or some audio files I might drop in). All you hear or have heard is a composition I improvised or composed on the go. Each set is a completely new song or composition that will never be repeated.
The Hardware part, I use a electric guitar or a bass plugged in my Phase 26 USB sound card which is used to record and play live guitar or bass sounds through Ableton Live. To control loops and record I use a Behringer BCD3000, a DJ Midi Controller which works perfectly for live control on what you do with the program. To play the piano, synthesizers and other type of noises I use a Korg nanoKey which is set on lower octave and a Miditech Midistart Music 49 USB Controler, which is on the higher octave. It's pretty easy to use both as you can use the nanoKey for basslines and the Miditech to play compositions or chords on the piano and synths. As you can say its all digital. Sadly can't really afford for a good analog synthesizer to play with.
On the software part, I use Ableton Live 8 together with some VST plugins I've found around. From the beginning of my set I start with a fresh New Live set, or I usually start with my "empty.als" file which contains 4 blank audio channels and 2 Midi Channels. As they are preset to work with my midi controller, this is faster way to predefine the buttons instead of having 3 minute radio silence. Audio channels are to record my guitar or bass loops, and the midi to loop and "record" the synthesizer. The music I create is pretty generative, as to say its slowly revolving around a composition or with time it develops into something different. To say its generative it revolves around the process of having many loops played alongside, as to which one is shorter than the other loop is longer than the previous. It creates this soundscape which changes with time, and you can improvise along it.

Get to da chopah!

Yesterday was the MAYDAY MAYHEM Festival at the Wasteland sim, and I was the first performer starting at2pm SLT.
I arrived at the Atropine stage early to set up my gear, send notices and other types of spam, as the crowd started to drop in earlier in the hour for the festival. For other events, Second Life is known to have the most impatient live music crowd ever, arriving at the spot only to leave in 10 seconds because they don't hear someone singing the same instant they teleported in. Not to mention the exactly same thing happens when artists have to change during the event at the top of the hour. Oh and the worst that could happen if the artist has equipment or stream trouble that he can fix in 1-5 minutes, the crowd runs away like if someone released gas in the venue.
However the crowd yesterday was complete opposite, and I really appreciate them for that. They knew for what they came for and sat through the whole festival without a flinch or complaint. They are the true music lovers.
I was amazed and really excited by the big turnout to this event. It's really rare in Second Life to have 42 people in the audience, especially for experimental music events. It goes to show that Second Life has a great following for the experimental media and arts too, we just need more of these festivals around the grid.
The set I did was my usual 2x 30 minutes compositions of ambient, experimental improvisations. I used my bass guitar too after long time sitting in the attic and catching dust. Also I was asked yesterday if I use a mini moog in real life, sadly I don't for many reasons. From "its more expensive then selling your kidney" to "I wouldn't know how to use the bloody thing".
If you are wondering how I do all this, one of these days I'll take a picture and explain. It's really easy. :)

At the top of the hour, 3pm SLT was The Invisible Band, led by Alazarin Mondrian. They have this really cool spacey music, the likes of Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream all mixed up with nostalgic game music. Great guitar solo's and riffs and rhythmic bass and drums. Gives you the feeling like you are playing arcade games on mushrooms. Luckily Second Life doesn't require credits to continue the game, so you can enjoy the music without worrying about that.
4pm SLT was a DJ Set from Aposiopesis Fullstop at The Junkyard. It was a nice DJ set with variety of mash-ups from hits and some chiptune music. Speaking of nostalgic game music, I discovered the band Anamanaguchi from this set. If you haven't heard them, they make trippy chiptune music with guitars and beats, keeping this type of music alive.
Sadly I had to miss Engrama and Diamanda's set due to bad headache, however insomnia and some freakin mice up on the roof kept me awake for the redzone set.
Redzone recently released a 4 track EP on their website, and I believe they must have played those tracks on the show yesterday. So what was their show like?
Combine hard guitar riffs and chords, with trippy violin, synths, beats and cello, add the dark Gothic voice that fits in really really good, multiply all that by more trippines and you get redzone. It's one of those bands that you have to listen to many times to start recognizing their songs, and each time you hear it sounds like something new. Being still kinda new for me, every set they play feels fresh to me, which is actually a really good thing. Having stayed from 4am until 5am to listen to them was totally worth it, and I suggest you to check them out in the future.
Overall this event was awesome. I hope redzone will continue doing this festival in the future, and invite and discover more experimental artists/bands in the future.

CTRL_ALT_DELETE

Ever felt like getting lost?
This place kinda gives you that feeling. It's one of those amazing places/sim you see and you have to come back again to explore some more. From underground paths, to lava pits, and hollow moon you won't find in travel brochures in the near future.
One path leads to another, so carefully choose your path and maybe from point A you arrive to point C via point F.
Speaking of point A.

No more pictures?
Here you can take even more.

Live Music and Second Life.

When I first joined Second Life, I've never even though of the possibility that Live Music could exist within a game. If someone ever told me about this concept before, I would have though it as a Science Fiction, but hey we live in 21st century and everything can be possible. First time I came across a live concert in Second Life was a band that played at this huge concert area, and to tell you the sim was full. I think it must have been over 60-100 avatars across this huge area, and the lag almost became unbearable. This was back in April 2008. And since then I got hooked up on the Live Music scene in Second Life. I've heard a lot of solo and the occasional bands play in the virtual world, and I think this is a great opportunity for solo artists and bands to present their music in a completely different environment. It gives a lot of space to improvise, experiment and do anything you would or wouldn't do in front of a real audience. While some only need a microphone and acoustic guitar, some also represent themselves using electronic instruments, like synthesizers, beat machines, electric guitars and rigs. Gives the possibility for a whole band to hook up on a stream using only a mixer, or they can be all over the world, using nothing but a Ninjam stream to synchronize and stream in Second Life. For all those new to this concept and have an account in Second Life, there is nothing stopping you to check out these events. Just log into the virtual world, check the events tab and look for Live Music. There is literally thousands of these events every week. Great way to listen to new music, meet new people, and even talk to the musicians. I can suggest you thousands of musicians and bands you should listen to, but hey why not discover them yourself.

Ninjas and The Astral Nexus.

Typical day, just fighting ninjas who invade my speakers.
And stopped by the Astral Nexus today to take these pictures of this amazing venue. I've played many sets here last year, and I was happy to see it again this Saturday. In Saturday my friend Astronimus Randt organized a 12 hour long charity event to raise money for "Relay for Life" and I was really happy that I was opening the event. They managed to raise 30K linden for a good cause.
I hope soon we might do a dual-stream with Astronimus. Live ambience and violin. Really looking forward for this event.

And for those who looked beyond the pictures, here is a 30 minute snippet of the show this Saturday.

Krakov Letov and the Live Videos.

I stumbled upon these video's ages ago, and some are done by my dear friend Aiden Witral.
Don't forget to check out his Youtube channel, he has video's from a lot of Live Music shows in Second Life, documenting them in his own artistic way.
http://www.youtube.com/user/aidenwitrial

Oh and the video's
This one is done at the old Notes Shack Pub in the Norwegian sim. It's a little electronica set I've came up with using only beats and few guitar loops, and this is part of it.

This one is done at my friend Isobel Gustafson's old venue. It was a multimedia event where the skies changed by the mood of the music. Too bad I couldn't follow my own show, too busy stuck in front of my Ableton Live screen.
Hooray for etheral!!!

One of the many islands on Aiden's sim. He is a great landscape artist, and I seriously consider to hire him to design a private island for me one day in real life. :)
Jokes aside, you should check out his video channel for the many landscapes he has designed and created.

Many of the other video's on Youtube.

A blog! About Krakov?

Any shows, thoughts, pictures, music I will share it here.
Follow me here on blogspot or in Second Life
"Krakov Letov" or my live music group "A Blissful Insomnia"

A little about me :)
Krakov Letov is an instrumentalist in SL.  His music can be described as ambient, experimental, noise, psychedelic, post-rock and so on. Krakov uses a live program for mixing guitar, bass, synth, loops, noises...even spoons, chopsticks, metal things, pen, paper or whatever he finds nearby, all played live with samples, loops and soundscapes. Every show is a different story as it's mostly improvisation.
